Meander along wide pathways and delight in the sweet scents of floral blooms with a visit to Ballarat Botanic Gardens. Extending over forty hectares of lush parkland, the Botanic Gardens are positioned in a tranquil location on the western shore of Lake Wendouree, just four kilometres from Ballarat’s CBD. The gardens feature an incredible collection of historic mature trees and stately marble statues set amidst garden beds erupting with a kaleidoscope of colours from vibrant seasonal blooms.
On entrance to the landscaped grounds, visitors are greeted by an ornate marble statue of Scottish hero William Wallace, and that feeling of freedom evoked by wide open spaces. The Botanic Gardens are divided into four distinct zones – the Central, North and South Gardens, and the lake foreshore precinct. The central section of the Garden features a more traditional parkland setting, where wide flat walking paths and open grassy spaces beckon you to languish on a picnic rug and bask in the sunshine. Listen to the relaxing sounds of families frolicking, or the sweet songs of birds chirping in the branches of nearby towering trees.
Beyond the Garden’s central zone, a range of historic and floral features await your discovery. Stimulate your senses with a visit to the Sensory Gardens, to interact with and explore a variety of plants strategically selected for their diverse textures, colours and scents. Wander inside the Robert Clark Conservatory to enjoy the delicate fragrances of seasonal floral displays. Or visit the Prime Minister’s Avenue where 28 Prime Ministers of Australia are displayed as bronze portraits on polished granite pedestals, including a portrait of one of the founding fathers of Federation, Alfred Deakin, who was the first Federal Member for Ballarat and the second Australian Prime Minister. This collection is a feature of national significance and enhances the park’s heritage appeal. A fine collection of exquisite marble statues grace the avenues and Statuary Pavilion of the Ballarat Botanic Gardens, adding to the elegant sophistication of the grounds.
Free guided walks and tours which help visitors discover the history and highlights of the Gardens are offered by volunteer guides on Sundays through Autumn and Spring, departing at 11am from the Conservatory. Rich in heritage and blooming with floral charm, it’s no wonder the Ballarat Botanic Gardens are considered one of Australia’s most significant cool climate gardens!
