Once known as ‘the World’, our laid-back country town was the second largest city in Queensland and everything you ever needed or wanted was here. Today, the pace has slowed a little since the boom days of the gold rush. Welcome to the Charters Towers Visitor Information Centre - your gateway to discovery!
The low-set timber structure of our centre was constructed in the 1880’s and originally used as a bank. A shady veranda hugs the entrance, with timber seating offering an inviting outlook over the CBD, and a quiet place to contemplate your next adventure.
As you step inside, a warm and enthusiastic welcome awaits you from our dedicated team of Volunteer Ambassadors. Our local experts are here to help, with travel information, assistance with bookings and loads local advice – perhaps even divulging a few local secrets you won’t discover elsewhere!

Charters Towers is a comfortable 90-minute drive southwest of Townsville, on the cusp of where the tropics meets the Outback. Queensland Rail’s Inlander service offers train transport to Charters Towers, on its regular journey between Townsville and Mount Isa. Bus Queensland also offers bus transfers between Townsville and Charters Towers on weekdays. The nearest airport is located in Townsville, with most major airlines offering domestic services in and out of the region. Black and White Taxis also provides local transport within Charters Towers.
Our visitor information centre is located at 74 Mosman Street, at the intersection of Gill Street in the CBD. Street parking is available nearby.
We are open 8:30am to 4pm weekdays, and 9am to 4pm on weekends and some public holidays during peak season, and 9am to 12pm on weekends from October to April.

If you’re travelling with an assistance animal in need of toileting, head one building down the street and you’ll find a small park which provides access to a larger park at the rear of the Information Centre, with grassy areas suitable for their needs.
