Discover Daisy Hill – A Koala Haven
A mere 30 minutes from Brisbane and less than an hour from the Gold Coast by car, the Daisy Hill Koala Centre is an educational centre, dedicated to the conservation of one of Australia’s most iconic animals. Nestled within the natural bushland of the Daisy Hill Conservation Park, this remarkable centre offers an engaging and multisensory experience that allows visitors to connect deeply with nature and learn more about koala conservation. As you stroll up the ramped boardwalk, the smell of eucalyptus fills the air, mixing with the soft sounds of rustling leaves and native bird calls, welcoming you into this tranquil haven of conservation and learning.
The journey begins with the outdoor koala enclosure. Here, sheltered by a canopy of towering eucalyptus trees, full of the gentle chatter of birdlife, you’ll find the koalas, each with its own story and personality. The sight of these iconic marsupials lazily perched on branches or napping in the shade sets a soothing and peaceful tone for your visit.
Inside the centre, a world of discovery awaits. Through a series of informative and interactive exhibits, you’ll learn about the unique biology of koalas and the conservation initiatives across South East Queensland. The exhibits are designed to engage all your senses, from the tactile models of koala habitats to auditory guides mimicking their unique vocalisations. This immersive learning environment not only deepens your understanding of koalas but also highlights the urgent need to protect them.
And, to top it all, it’s free!
Koala Biology Interpretation Area
Step into the Koala Biology Interpretation Area, where the lives of koalas are brought into sharp focus with engaging exhibits that appeal to all ages. You’ll uncover fascinating facts about the koalas’ diet, behaviour and the challenges they face in the wild. Interactive touchscreens allow you to navigate through their natural habitats while audio descriptions provide an in-depth narrative, enhancing your connection to these delightful creatures.
The scents of the bushland accompany you as you explore tactile models that portray koala habitats. The soundtrack to this experience is the occasional rustle of koalas moving nearby amongst the leaves and the calls of birds in the surrounding bushland. This immersive environment is not just educational but also deeply sensory, making the learning process both enjoyable and memorable.
Koala Hospital Play Area
For younger visitors, the Koala Hospital Play Area offers an engaging, hands-on experience. Here, children can step into the shoes of a wildlife carer or vet, nurturing their empathy and curiosity. The experience is built around role-playing activities, using medical props and soft plush koala toys to simulate the care and rehabilitation process. It’s a realistic yet age-appropriate way for kids to learn, hopefully fostering a lifelong love and respect for wildlife conservation.
Teachers and educators can further enhance this experience by downloading curriculum-based teacher packs for different year levels from the Koala Centre website, ensuring that the visit aligns with educational goals.
Wildlife Officer Presentations
At 11 AM and 2 PM each day, you can join the insightful presentations by dedicated wildlife officers. The officers know the resident koalas so well that they can tell visitors their personal stories, detailing their journeys and the extensive conservation efforts put in place to protect them. This is a wonderful way to learn about the extensive koala conservation initiatives being undertaken within South East Queensland, and there is great information given to inspire and empower visitors to join the cause. The passion and dedication of the officers shines through as they share their knowledge and invite you to become a part of the conservation story. These engaging sessions are both enlightening and inspiring.
At 1.30 PM, wildlife officers feed the koalas, making this the best time to see the animals awake.
Woodland Theatre
The top floor houses the Woodland Theatre, where seasonal displays and captivating documentaries recount the broader conservation story of Queensland’s wildlife. As you sink into the comfortable seating, the air-conditioned environment provides a cool respite from the warmth of the outdoors. The immersive audio-visual presentations describe various conservation projects, offering a broader perspective on the interconnectedness of nature and the role koalas play in it. The documentaries’ vivid soundscapes and visually rich content ensure that every visitor leaves with newfound knowledge and inspiration.
Picnic Grounds and Walking Trails
As you exit the Koala Centre, the adventure continues along the ramped boardwalk leading to the extensive picnic grounds and walking trails of the surrounding Daisy Hill Conservation Park, which is part of Queensland’s first Koala Bushland Coordinated Conservation Area. Together with other protected areas, the park provides a combined area of over 1500 hectares of intact natural koala habitat between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
There are trails to suit everyone: walkers and dog walkers, mountain bikers and even horse riders. The 450-metre Paperbark trail, accessible for wheelchairs and prams, invites you to take a leisurely stroll, with the earthy scent of the forest floor underfoot and the gentle breeze wafting through the trees. It’s not unusual to encounter wallabies while listening to the melodious laughter of kookaburras, and you may even spot a goanna basking in the sun.
There are three shared trails for use by walkers, dog-walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. All trails start at the Daisy Hill trail hub: the 5.2-kilometre Spotted gum circuit, the 5.7-kilometre Stringybark circuit and the 9-kilometre Buhot Creek circuit. All three circuits are Grade 3 walks and return distances are measured from the Daisy Hill trail hub. The 2.4-kilometre Plunkett mallee circuit starts in Don and Christine Burnett Conservation Area. Note that all dogs must be on a lead.
This serene environment gives visitors the opportunity to practise their koala-spotting skills while enjoying the natural beauty of the eucalypt forests, melaleuca wetlands and billabongs. Discover secluded picnic spots where you can rest and reflect on the day’s experiences, embraced by the sounds and sights of the native bushland.
