This indulgent micro-hotel is cocooned within the privacy of the vineyards of Inkwell Wines, which produces organically grown grapes and low-intervention wines of outstanding quality. Welcome to the Vineyard

As you enter down the gravel driveway of the property, you will pass fertile vineyards lined with towering gum trees. After parking, you cross a small bridge and arrive on the front deck and outdoor wine tasting area for Inkwell’s cellar door. Inside you will be greeted at the cellar door and check-in area. The scent and sound of a wood fire burning in the cooler months imparts a cosy, calm ambience. The cellar door tasting rooms are also located on this upper level of the two-storey establishment, cantilevered out over lower deck areas looking west across the vineyards. Hotel California Road accommodation suites are located on the lower level, ensuring the privacy of guests.

Sumptuous Suites

Hotel California Road offers three luxurious king guest suites, including one which can be made accessible for guests with mobility impairments upon request at booking. Every element of the suites’ interior exudes quality and sophistication – from the 100-watt Bluetooth sound system to the smooth, high-thread count linens. Each room is outfitted with a leather couch, 50-inch HDTV, bespoke wardrobe and food service area, small breakfast table and desk. The suites’ luxurious bathroom features dual vanities and walk-in rain shower, or bathe in serenity in the giant soaking tub with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the vines. Enjoy a selection of Inkwell wines on offer in the mini-bar, as you languish on your large, private, west-facing deck, enjoying the warmth of the setting sun and listening to the lullaby of birdsong from over fifty species of native birds. All this indulgence is sure to provide the perfect fodder for nights filled with sweet dreams, as you snuggle between the smooth, silky sheets of your floating king-sized bed.

Sustainability at Heart

Inkwell Wines and Hotel California Road have been created with a passion for sustainability at the very heart of all they do. They produce organically grown grapes, following sustainable and regenerative principles to produce low intervention wines that express the ‘fingerprint of place’ of this iconic McLaren Vale vineyard. Their quality selection of wines are fermented naturally from unique indigenous yeasts, without additions or corrections that impact flavours and aromas. The result is age-worthy wines that retain their natural freshness and intensity. Since commencing operations in 2005, Inkwell Wines have deliberately chosen to keep things simple and sustainable, using one tractor, one de-stemmer, one press, small fermenters that don’t require artificial cooling, oh and one dog! By removing as much of the human intervention as possible from their winegrowing and wine-making practices, they are ensuring you can enjoy the authentic flavours and fruit of their special site and labour for many years to come.

The adjoining micro-hotel was built in 2018 and is the sustainable brainchild of owners Dudley and Irina. Its clever, modern architecture is fashioned from twenty recycled shipping containers and as many reclaimed, upcycled and vintage materials as possible. It’s unique, eco-conscious design means guests can feel good knowing that their chosen lodging has a minimal footprint on the environment, without needing to compromise on comfort or quality.

Accessibility

One of the suites can be converted into a wheelchair friendly “accessible” suite with a fully equipped accessible bathroom. The hotel must be contacted at the time of booking for details and arrangements (please visit the “accessible suite” link on the Hotel California Road website for more details). The top viewing deck is up a spiral staircase, however, the other viewing decks are accessible by wheelchair.

Rooms also have ample USB charging / power points, a desk and small table with chairs. There is also an outdoor common courtyard and deck for hotel guests to enjoy vineyard sunsets. Australian continental breakfast is provided.

Hotel California Road is open seven days a week. Special rates are available for two-night minimum stays when booked directly. No kitchen or cooking facilities are provided. The maximum occupancy in each room is two people. This is a non-smoking property and no pets are permitted.
