Experience A Warm Welcome
The Injune Visitor Information Centre is a welcoming space designed to help you discover all there is to experience in our local area.
Our accredited centre is located on the main highway in the heart of town. The log cabin style building is surrounded by a spacious parkland, featuring all the essentials for travellers – comfortable outdoor seating, a water fountain for filling water bottles, an amenities block, and a playground perfect for kids to run off excess energy after a long car ride.
The centre is constructed of beautiful cypress pine manufactured at the local sawmills. The extensive use of timber throughout creates a warm and inviting ambience, with a touch of modern country charm.
Floid (our quirky emu sculpture) greets you at our entrance. As you step inside, our welcoming and knowledgeable volunteers will make you feel right at home. Our team are ready and willing to share their expertise with all who visit. They can provide detailed information about attractions, accommodation, events, activities and services in the area, and have a range of maps, brochures and guides about the region to help make travel planning a breeze.
Our incredible virtual reality plinth and headset allows visitors to gain a sense of the jaw-dropping landscapes and natural splendour of Carnarvon National Park from the comfort of our centre. This state-of-the-art VR experience features footage of two of the park’s most acclaimed attractions – the Moss Gardens and the Art Gallery Walk.
Here you’ll also find original local works of art adorning the walls, as well as a book shop and souvenirs for sale. Call by for a chat, enjoy a complimentary cuppa and relax on our veranda. Our centre is conveniently positioned in the same complex as the local library, art gallery and café, meaning a stop here is a must on your travel itinerary.
History and Charismatic Characters
Beneath the surface of its small-town charm, Injune and its surrounding sandstone peaks provide a fascinating place of exploration for history buffs and nature-lovers alike.
For thousands of years before European colonisation, the land’s traditional custodians had (and continue to have) a strong relationship to this dramatic landscape. They are understood to often describe Carnarvon Gorge as a place of learning and deep spirituality. You can gain rich insights into the past along the Art Gallery Walk – an approximately 11-kilometre trek that offers a sense of ancient connection to this land, passing a rich and fragile collection of ochre stencils, engravings and freehand paintings that adorn the Gorge’s sandstone walls.
In terms of its colonial history, Injune is quite youthful indeed, at just over 100 years old! While the surrounding area was first explored in the mid-1840s, the rugged landscape delayed broader settlement until much later. The township of Injune was not founded until around 1920, when it was established as a camp at the end of the railway line heading north from Roma. The line was built as part of the Soldier Settlement scheme, with land along and near the line being allotted to Returned Servicemen from the First World War. You can encounter a piece of this proud past with a visit to the historic train station, where a fully restored C17 locomotive is on display in all its former heritage glory.
The town was officially gazetted in 1922. Today, Injune and surrounds’ primary industries are cattle grazing, sustainable timber production and, of course, tourism.
A stroll down Injune’s main street introduces you to some of the charismatic characters who’ve helped shape the town’s history. A series of rustic metal statues feature the inspiring stories of some of our local legends, offering a unique insight into our past.
Local Attractions
For a small town we sure have a lot to offer – both within Injune and further afield in our beautiful backyard, scattered with National Parks and overflowing with natural splendour.
Before you leave town, be sure to check out the Injune Creek Gallery, located within the same precinct as the Visitor Information Centre. This vibrant arts space showcases the inspiring creative works of our local artisans, as well as hosting an exciting program of exhibitions and events featuring regional and metropolitan talent.
Feel the need to stretch your legs? Take a leisurely wander along the sealed walking track surrounding our tranquil lagoon. Immerse your senses in a slice of real Australian bush within easy reach of the town centre. Shrouded with magnificent old gum trees and resounding with birdsong, this natural billabong is a peaceful place to relax and soak in the serenity.
But without question one of the area’s most acclaimed attractions is nearby Carnarvon National Park. Have an unforgettable encounter with nature and history amidst the towering sandstone cliffs, diverse flora and fauna and ancient rock art of Carnarvon Gorge. Concealed between the rugged ranges of the central highlands, the Carnarvon Creek carves a watery path between a steep-sided gorge, creating a spectacular setting for nature-based adventures. In the Mount Moffatt section of the park you’ll discover a distinctly different landscape, featuring open plains dotted with sandstone outcrops. Here you can also visit Consuelo Tableland, Queensland’s highest plateau.
Explore cattle country and scenic sandstone escarpments along the Arcadia Valley Loop Drive, including a visit to Lonesome Lookout in Expedition National Park.
Lake Nuga Nuga National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, and home to the largest natural water body in Central Queensland’s Sandstone Belt.
Our region’s profound natural beauty makes hiking, camping, birdwatching and immersion in nature popular pastimes for visitors and locals alike.
