Accessibility
The Bass Coast Shire and Phillip Island have made tremendous efforts to make this destination and its attractions accessible to everyone. Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre offers a range of accessible features to help all visitors feel welcome and supported.
Access to the island via public transport is limited. The nearest bus stop is located approximately a kilometre away at the Big Wave in Newhaven. Services are provided by South Coast Bus Lines and VLine, with buses running from Melbourne – pay on-board using either cash or EFTPOS. Bus services run four times a day from Melbourne Monday to Friday, with two services on weekends and public holidays. For those unable to manage the walk from the bus stop, South Coast Taxis provides taxi services across the island, and its maxicabs are all wheelchair-accessible.
There are two accessible parking bays along with two EV chargers located directly in front of the Visitor Information Centre. From the parking area, there is a smooth, step-free pathway made up of concrete, timber decking and a gently sloping ramp with handrails. The entrance to the centre features wide, automatic doors that easily accommodate wheelchairs, mobility aids and prams.
Inside the centre, navigation is made easy by the open-plan, single-level layout with smooth flooring. Tactile ground surface indicators are located along the external pathway leading to the entrance and there’s Braille signage on the toilet doors. Visitors who require a lower counter can make use of the easy-access side desk located at the service counter. An accessible bathroom is located at the rear of the centre next to the public toilets and meeting room.
The centre is also mindful of visitors with sensory needs. The meeting room can be used as a quiet space when it is not in use and sensory support items are available upon request, including KultureCity sensory inclusive bags containing noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, a feeling thermometer and a KultureCity VIP lanyard. Communication boards are also available to support visitors with non-verbal or low-verbal communication needs.
Visitors with animals will find a grassy area for toileting, with a water fountain and bowl located at the entrance to the centre; there is also a bowl of fresh water available on the deck. Dog waste bags are available from the counter.
The Wildlife Corridor display, located outside the centre, is positioned on uneven gravel and may be difficult to access for people using wheelchairs or mobility aids. Similarly, overflow parking at the rear of the centre requires access across this same gravel surface. Public toilets are only available during opening hours.
A Mobi-Chair® floating beach wheelchair is available for complimentary loan from the Visitor Information Centre.
Visitor Information Centre staff have completed accessibility training and are ready to assist with any questions or needs you may have when you arrive. Visitors are also welcome to get in touch by phone or email for assistance in planning their visit; contact details are on the website.
