  • Where Culture and Creativity Converge

The Queensland Performing Arts Centre – otherwise known as QPAC – rests on the lands of the Jagera and Turrbal peoples.

The organisation acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of this country and recognises their rich cultural heritage and enduring connection to the land, waters and skies. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are this country’s original storytellers, and it is QPAC’s privilege to continue to share stories and be a place of gathering on this land that has been a meeting place for millennia.

QPAC is a vibrant precinct where culture and creativity converge. It’s an inclusive and engaging space where audiences and artists come together, and creative expression takes centre stage.

Hosting a diverse range of local, national and international artists and companies, QPAC has been the home of live performance in Queensland for 40 years. Nestled on the southern banks of the Brisbane River, this cultural icon warmly welcomes over 1.5 million visitors annually to experience more than 1200 performances that captivate and engage audiences from every walk of life. From the grandeur of opera and ballet to the exuberance of musicals and contemporary dance, QPAC invites you to connect, explore, and be inspired as you immerse your senses in the transformational power of the performing arts.

Prepare to be transported to a wondrous realm of entertainment where the only limit is your imagination. Feel the buzz of energy and soak in the atmosphere of the foyer, where the clinking of glasses harmonises with the excited conversation of show-goers. Once seated inside the theatre, feel the anticipation build as the lights dim and a hush falls over the audience, marking the beginning of a magical experience.

QPAC is poised to become Australia’s largest performing arts centre under one roof, featuring four world-class performance venues and a fifth on the way. Each distinct space offers an unforgettable experience – from the expansive stages and grand acoustics of the Lyric Theatre and Concert Hall to the timeless charm of the Playhouse and the intimacy of the Cremorne Theatre.

Along with its dynamic lineup of performances featuring some of the world’s most celebrated artists and promising new talent, QPAC also hosts a range of workshops, outdoor performances and exclusive behind-the-scenes tours, plus several celebrated dining destinations.

An outing to QPAC is sure to have you calling for an encore!

    A Brief Orientation

Here’s a quick orientation to QPAC to help you get your bearings. To ensure your visit is a relaxing experience, please arrive early and allow plenty of time to find your seat.

QPAC can be accessed via several entrances and a host of public and private transport options, which will be described later in this audio guide. Many patrons will arrive via the pedestrian tunnel that runs through QPAC, connecting Grey Street to South Bank, with entrances at each end. We’ll begin our orientation from the Grey Street entrance of the pedestrian tunnel.

Midway along the tunnel to your left, automated sliding glass doors provide entry to the ground-floor foyer. An usher is on-hand to offer assistance, and comfortable seating provides a place to gather or relax prior to performances. Centrally located lifts and stairs provide access to all levels of the Lyric Theatre and Concert Hall. At the opposite end of the ground-floor foyer, another set of automated glass doors leads to the open-air Cascade Court, Bistro by QPAC and the Lyrebird restaurant.

QPAC comprises six levels: Ground Level, Mezzanine, Lower Minstrel Gallery, Level 2, Theatre Mezzanine and Level 4. The Main Box Office and cloakroom are located on the Mezzanine Level, one floor up. The main foyer area for the Lyric Theatre and Concert Hall is located on Level 2. The Lyric Theatre is on the river side of the complex, while the Concert Hall is on the Grey Street side. Each theatre has its own bar area, merchandise stand and cast board. Level 2 can also be accessed directly via a pedestrian overpass. Level 4 features the Balcony Bar, centrally located between both theatres.

The ground floor foyer of QPAC is a hive of activity prior to performances. Patrons attending the Cremorne or Playhouse Theatres (towards the southern end of the precinct) may opt to avoid the crowds by making their way directly to their respective theatre entrance, via Russell Street for the Playhouse and the South Bank Cultural Forecourt for the Cremorne Theatre.

    The Lyric Theatre

From the moment you enter the stunning surrounds of the Lyric Theatre, you can feel the tingle of excited energy in the air. With 2000 seats, exceptional acoustics and spacious stages graced by some of the world’s most talented artists, the Lyric Theatre is QPAC’s largest venue, hosting ballet, opera and large-scale theatre events, including musical productions.

Your magical experience begins the moment you arrive at the grand riverside foyer facing Melbourne Street, where city views provide a stunning backdrop to pre-performance drinks. The intricate patterns of light and shadow play across the walls, adding depth and dimension to the space. Natural light filters through expansive windows during the day, while at night, the strategic lighting design casts a warm, golden glow, creating a theatrical ambience even before the performance begins.

As you make your way into the auditorium, the sense of eager anticipation begins to build. The theatre is arranged in a traditional horseshoe shape, with continental seating including stalls and two levels of balconies. As you settle into your seat and make yourself comfortable, you may hear musicians warming up in the orchestra pit, signalling the prelude of an unforgettable journey through the enchantment of live performance. The theatre seems to resonate with the echo of applause and the whispered secrets of the stage, adding to the overall wonder and intrigue.

Here are a few fun facts you may not know about QPAC and the Lyric Theatre. Work began on QPAC in early 1979, the project taking five years and costing $66 million to complete. The centre was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of Kent on 20 April 1985. The elaborate Royal Festival celebrating the opening holds the record for the largest number of performers ever gracing the Lyric Theatre stage, with 400 participating in the lavish event.

The Lyric Theatre boasts a vertical void known as a fly tower, used to suspend stage lighting and scenery. The Lyric Theatre’s fly tower reaches a massive height of eleven storeys!

    The Concert Hall

QPAC’s Concert Hall is one of Australia’s most spectacular concert venues. Nestled next to the Lyric Theatre on the Grey Street side of the precinct, the Concert Hall boasts a versatile design that sets the stage for unforgettable performances, ranging from grand orchestral concerts to side-splitting stand-up comedy shows. The Hall can accommodate up to 1800 enraptured audience members who are treated to prime views of the action unfolding before them.

Above the stage, the towering presence of the magnificent Klais (PRON: ‘Klyce’) Grand Organ commands your attention. It’s one of the largest instruments in Australia. This stunning musical masterpiece proudly displays its impressive array of over 6780 pipes, which not only adds to the visual splendour but also enhances the acoustics, creating a truly immersive musical experience. The largest pipes are those at the front and stand around 10 metres tall while the smallest are a minute 10 millimetres speaking length. Air conditioning within the Concert Hall must be kept constant with particular attention to humidity control to alleviate any shrinking or expansion of the sensitive spruce timber lathes.

You may be interested to learn that along with the Grand Organ, there are 23 pianos within the Centre. No wonder QPAC brims with musical melody!

    The Cremorne Theatre

The Cremorne Theatre is QPAC’s most versatile and intimate performance space. Nestled in the heart of QPAC on the river side of the centre, the 200-seat Cremorne offers patrons a unique opportunity to get up close to the action and artists. Here, creativity knows no bounds, and the line between the stage and the audience blurs into an unforgettable experience. Referred to as a ‘black box theatre’ due to its simple, adaptable design, this performance space hosts intimate acts ranging from children’s productions to contemporary theatre and one-person shows.

The Cremorne is named after one of Brisbane’s best-known historic theatres which opened in 1911. The previous open-air theatre (originally known as Cremorne Gardens) occupied part of the site of today’s Queensland Art Gallery on the corner of Melbourne Street and Stanley Quay. It was owned by John Neil McCallum, the father of noted Australian actor, John McCallum.

The Cremorne enjoyed its heyday from the 1920s onwards. It presented legendary Australian performers and the most popular vaudeville stars of the day, until it was destroyed by fire in 1954. The Cremorne Theatre of today continues to pay homage to the creative pioneering spirit of its predecessor, serving as a popular venue for emerging talent and experimental theatre productions.

    The Playhouse

The 850-seat Playhouse Theatre is tailor-made for the finest theatrical and dance performances.

Positioned at the southern end of QPAC off Russell Street, this medium-sized venue features two levels of seating – the stalls and the balcony – arranged in a slight curve facing the stage. The Playhouse’s design ensures there is not a bad seat in the house, with the audience feeling connected to the stage no matter where they’re seated in the theatre. With a smaller stage than the Lyric Theatre, the Playhouse is perfect for mid-sized productions including ballet, theatre, musicals and circus.

Opening in September 1998, The Playhouse completed Brisbane architect Robin Gibson’s original vision for the Queensland Cultural Centre at South Bank. The Playhouse adds another exciting chapter to the rich chronicles of theatre tradition in this cosmopolitan city. In fact, it is almost literally built on the foundations of Brisbane’s first entertainment space, Croft’s Amphitheatre, which opened in 1847.

    Dining and Drinks

Take a gastronomic journey around the globe at one of QPAC’s onsite dining destinations for the ultimate fusion of culture and cuisine. From refined dining to casual eats, you’ll find a venue to match your mood and appetite.

Kick off your evening sipping a spritz cocktail, feasting on tapas, pizzas and share plates bursting with bold flavours, or exploring the extensive wine list. The warm and stylish ambience is sure to make this a pre-show crowd-pleaser.

Bars are available at each theatre, offering a selection of refreshments for your enjoyment. Why not ease into the evening with a chilled glass of bubbles in hand? You can even pre-order your interval drinks – just ask our friendly bar staff prior to the show.
