More than Just a Train Ride

The Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway offers more than just an everyday train ride, instead providing an immersive journey into the fascinating world of steam railways enhanced by a variety of interactive and educational experiences. Guided tours of our historic train stations and locomotives allow visitors to delve into the rich history of Queensland’s railways as expert volunteers share captivating stories and facts about our collection. One specific highlight? Kilrie, our cherished locomotive who recently celebrated her 100th birthday!

On special running days, guests can ratchet up their experience and enjoy guided access inside the locomotive cab: getting an up-close-and-personal look at the controls and gaining unique insight into intricate steam engine operation. Historical displays at Swanbank Station further enrich the experience, showcasing the history and restoration of our locomotives and carriages while building appreciation for the craftsmanship that brings these machines to life.

Visitors are also invited to engage in hands-on exploration of vintage railway tools, equipment and memorabilia: a tactile experience and rare opportunity to further connect with the Queensland railway heritage. With our dedicated team of volunteers guiding visitors throughout every step of the journey, we ensure all who come aboard enjoy an engaging and memorable experience.

    Your Heritage Train Experience

Your adventure begins at Swanbank Station, a lovingly restored 1950s timber station where you’ll notice the faint scent of the nearby wetlands and hear the calls of native birds before stepping into a charming souvenir shop. Browsing memorabilia and collecting your tickets, you’ll hold a piece of history in your hands and marvel at their vintage design. An elegant 1880s timber carriage – with its polished interior and vintage craftsmanship – or the modern comfort of a former Sunlander carriage await you on board, either option transporting you back to the golden age of rail with a deep sense of nostalgia.

After departing Swanbank, the train rolls into the heart of Australian bushland where the clickity-clack of the wheels and the scent of eucalyptus set the tone for your experience. A landscape featuring remnants of the region’s coal-mining heritage – rusty old shelters, weathered boilers and abandoned mine shafts – pays homage to the area’s industrial history before the locomotive pauses briefly at Box Flat, offering a fascinating glimpse into historic railway operations as you witness traditional crew shift-change practices.

The scenery then shifts from dense bush to rolling farmland where cows graze in open fields. Curious horses, meanwhile, often gallop alongside the train and add a touch of whimsy to the journey. The locomotive negotiates a sharp curve near Bundamba Racecourse, revealing a hidden lagoon, before descending a hill and traversing Bundamba Creek. Pulling into Bundamba Racecourse Station, the locomotive swaps ends for the return journey as passengers take in their surroundings.

The return leg is no less enchanting, and you’ll feel the locomotive work harder as it pushes uphill, its rhythm echoing the determination of the engine. Each chuff seems to say, “I think I can, I think I can” before shifting triumphantly to “I thought I could, I thought I could” as you near the crest following this exciting change in pace.

Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway is the proud owner of three steam locomotives: PB15 448 was built in Maryborough in 1908 and was our first locomotive; Kilrie hails from Victoria and turns 100 in 2024; and C17 761, also known as Booringa, which was also built in Maryborough and dates to 1927. While we always try to run steam locomotives on Market and Picnic Trains, due to the nature of vintage steam locomotives, we may need to substitute a heritage diesel locomotive on part or all of a service. However, our diesel locomotives have their own charm and history, the 1616 coming into service in 1963 for Queensland Railways branch line use and the 5802 having spent its working life shunting wagons at Mica Creek Power Station.
