Welcome to Redlands IndigiScapes Centre
This inspiring educational environment centre, nestled within 14.5 hectares of pristine bushland, offers an invitation to explore and connect with nature in an immersive, enchanting and serene environment. Whether you are a nature lover, a family seeking adventure, or a tourist exploring new terrain, IndigiScapes provides a wide range of interactive activities and experiences to feel, hear and smell. The Redlands IndigiScapes Centre is located in the Southeast Brisbane suburb of Capalaba. To truly experience all there is to offer, guests usually spend from one to four hours at IndigiScapes.
Unwind with a leisurely wander along three kilometres of carefully maintained bush trails, where every turn reveals another sight, sound or secret of the native Australian landscape. Beautiful wildflowers, majestic trees, and curious wildlife await discovery, while rustling leaves and melodic birdsong create a soothing soundtrack to enrich your journey. A range of sensory delights awaits at every corner, ensuring a rewarding and memorable visit. As you return to the centre, the alluring aroma of freshly brewed coffee from the IndigiCafe wafts through the air, inviting you to relax and refresh after your time spent wandering and discovering.
Walking Trails
It’s easy to lose track of time when exploring these exquisite surroundings. You’ll be enchanted by over three kilometres of walking tracks lined with old scribbly gum trees, native plants and wildflowers. Native plants you may come across include wild mint and lemon-scented tea tree. You may not be able to smell these divine scents as you walk along the tracks, but come closer to the plants, touch and sniff the leaves, and their refreshing natural fragrances will reveal themselves. In wildflower season, there’s an explosion of blooms in bright and pastel hues. You're likely to encounter wildlife as you wander through the bushland, so remain alert while enjoying your stroll through the grounds, but we ask guests not to feed the animals.
There are three walking tracks in total, and they are all graded as easy. One of the tracks leads to a spectacular 400-year-old tallowwood tree, which is worth a visit and offers a great photo opportunity. This incredible tree stands about 20 metres tall with a wide trunk that is gnarled and twisted from a lightning strike. Alongside the tallowwood tree is the viewing platform overlooking a waterway that is home to all kinds of fish, eels, birds and even turtles.
Discovery Centre
When you walk through the doors of our centre, you will find yourself in an open reception area, where you will have two options. Turning right will take you into our gift shop, while continuing straight ahead will take you to another set of doors which lead to the Discovery Centre. Here, you will find lots of interpretive signage which informs visitors all about our native plants and wildlife. In the Discovery Centre, there is a cosy nook, which is designed to look like a tree hollow. Children especially will love snuggling into the tree hollow and learning what there is to be discovered on the interactive screen which displays visual information only.
All of our visitors love our displays of natural artefacts, which we hire from Queensland Museum. It’s a great opportunity to explore and learn through interactive activities. What’s more, we change the artefacts in the Discovery Centre fortnightly, so you’ll learn something new every time you visit.
Native Botanic Gardens
The native botanic gardens showcase the rich biodiversity of the Redlands area. They really are a feast for the senses, offering guests the opportunity to freely touch and smell the textures and scents of our native plants in a peaceful and natural setting. Breathe in the earthy fragrance of soil mingled with the sweet scent of native flowers. Feel rejuvenated as you wander through carefully arranged gardens, sense the intricacy of textured leaves, and experience the beauty of resilient coastal plants, designed to thrive despite the often harsh Queensland weather conditions. The botanic gardens are segmented into thematic sections such as wildlife, wetlands and coastal gardens.
Visitors with green thumbs who want to create their own paradise at home will want to head over to our thriving Community Native Nursery, to gather inspiration and purchase native plants to transform their own backyard or outdoor space.
Nature Playground
IndigiScapes’ nature playground provides a lively contrast with its interactive installations, and is welcoming of all guests. Some of the things you will find here include a flying fox, wooden balance beam obstacle course, an education trail, a water pumping station, a sandpit, and a hedge maze. The surrounding melaleuca trees and plush grassy hills provide the perfect calming, shady space to sit back and watch the kids tire themselves out while having the time of their lives. The playful giggles of children mingle with the exhilarating click and whir of the flying fox and the splashes from the water pumping station, adding vibrancy to the natural tranquillity.
IndigiCafe
The IndigiCafe is a highlight for food enthusiasts, offering delectable meals infused with bush tucker ingredients and flavours. Enjoy an alfresco meal on our covered deck overlooking Coolnwynpin Creek, where the sound of flowing water creates the perfect backdrop to your relaxing dining experience. We also have indoor seating for those who prefer it. Delight in the unique flavours of dishes prepared with native herbs and spices, and savour the tempting fragrance of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The menu at IndigiCafe is seasonal, offering you the chance to try something new each time you visit. One staple that remains on our menu year-round, however, is our IndigiCake. Don't miss this tasty combination of apple, coconut and sultanas, a flavour that is unique to IndigiCafe.
Eco Market
For those who have an interest in sustainability, the Eco Market is held once a quarter and is a must-visit, featuring stalls brimming with sustainable products and eco-friendly crafts. The wholesome aroma of handcrafted soaps, and the unique and intricate designs and textures of our natural products like wood carvings and jewellery will have you coming back for more. Contact us using the details in the Accessibility section of this audio guide to find out the date of the next Eco Market. We hope to see you there!
Guided Tours
Although visitors are free to explore IndigiScapes at their own pace, we also offer guided tours to further enhance your experience.
