  • Welcome to Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk

Enjoy a thrilling combination of adventure, discovery and natural beauty when you visit Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk. Be swept away by breathtaking views, breathe in the crisp air and be soothed by the babbling of the crystal-clear Cedar Creek, all from a vantage point of up to 30 metres above the rainforest floor.

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is Australia’s only family-owned skywalk, and we can’t wait to host you. We are located in the stunning surrounds of Mount Tamborine, just a 75-minute drive south of Brisbane. The Skywalk is 1.5 kilometres long, and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace. You will walk along a variety of surfaces, including 300 metres of high-tech steel bridges, which will lead you through the highest points of the upper tree canopy. The Skywalk experience also includes a 40-metre steel cantilever bridge, which soars an incredible 30 metres above a glistening creek. This then joins up with a winding pathway of forest-floor trails.

    What to Expect

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a self-guided experience. This means you can complete the walk in your own time and at your own pace. The walk is rated as a moderate intensity level. There are various rest stops along the path to the cantilever which are perfect for pausing to soak up the atmosphere. There are also plenty of photo opportunities along the way.

Your adventure is set in a magical, lush wonderland of 30 acres of privately-owned, emerald green rainforest. The Skywalk begins at the Rainforest Eco Gallery and passes through the middle and upper canopies of the rainforest. The Skywalk is a stable, high-tech steel structure that takes visitors through the canopies safely and securely while providing spectacular views of the surrounding hinterland. After you’ve explored the top canopies, you can venture down to the lower canopy to take in some of the area’s most popular attractions, including crystal-clear rock pools, rushing waterfalls, a butterfly lookout and a local history enclosure. All of these points of interest are marked with signposts to lead guests along the way. The cantilever is a 40m-long bridge that soars 30 metres above the valley, offering incredible views over the creek and rainforest canopies below. From this point, the walk returns along the rainforest floor to the Rainforest Eco Centre to conclude a spectacular journey.

The upper walkway and cantilever lookout are step free and of a gentle gradient. The deck is made of expanded metal grate with hole sizes of approximately 25 by 50 millimetres, so caution should be exercised by visitors using walking sticks or canes and wheelchair users with small front casters. The walkway starts immediately outside the visitor centre. The lower section is a gravel path that does contain a number of sections with three to four steps. The path to the waterfall lookout is gravel with a gentle gradient. It becomes narrow over the final two bridges with a width of 750 millimetres  Wheelchair users need to retrace their route back over the steel walkway to the visitors centre.

You may notice changes to the quality of light as you explore the different areas of the rainforest. In lower areas like the forest floor and middle canopy, the light is soft, dappled and makes appearances when it can through gaps in the foliage of the towering trees. In these lower lying areas, the foliage is thicker, the leaves are closer together, and the air is cooler and damper. You will appreciate the rich, earthy aroma as you explore these areas.

In the top canopy, you will be exposed to more unfiltered sunlight and gentle breezes as the boughs around you sway and gently sigh. The atmosphere is not as damp up here, and you may be able to feel this on your skin or notice the crisper scent as you breathe in the pure mountain air, unfiltered by foliage.

    The Main Centre

The main centre serves as the start and end point of the Skywalk experience. In this building, you will find our Rainforest Eco Gallery, giftshop and Birdwing Cafe. It’s up to you whether to visit the main centre either before or after you embark on your journey through the Skywalk, but the following description may help you decide.

The Rainforest Eco Gallery showcases a variety of local animals, birds and reptiles. There are dioramas of Australian and exotic insects, butterfly collections and a large aquarium brimming with local marine life. There are also information panels informing guests about local and Indigenous and history. These exhibits of the local flora and fauna and the area’s human history are sure to deepen your appreciation and enhance your experience.

Our giftshop is the perfect place to find beautiful local souvenirs to remind you of your journey through Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk. There are plenty of gifts suitable for children, including books that will help them to understand the rainforest ecosystem. Other gifts include a range of caps, T-shirts and greeting cards. Take your time browsing for that perfect gift for a friend or loved one, or for that treat you’ve been meaning to buy for yourself.

If you’re hungry, need a pick-me-up or simply want to sit back and bask in the tranquil ambience and sounds of nature, head into our Birdwing Cafe. We serve premium coffee, a variety of teas, soft-drinks and healthy juices. We also offer light snacks, including cookies, cakes and slices. You can choose to sit inside the cafe itself, or on our expansive deck which overlooks the magnificent rainforest.

    Our History

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is owned by Ian and Jennifer Moore and their family. They have been residents of the area since 1988. Construction of the Skywalk began in 2004, and it turned out to be a very long process and an extremely difficult venture. It took nearly five years of planning, research, obtaining state and local council approvals and overcoming various obstacles along the way. It was not easy building a high steel bridge on steep, volcanic soil in the middle of a pristine rainforest without destroying the fragile environment. However, not a single tree was destroyed in the process!

For the Skywalk construction, large 120-tonne cranes with booms up to 80 metres long lifted the tower columns and 40-metre walkway and cantilever sections up, over and then carefully down through the canopy into place, high above the forest floor. The main centre was created and assembled on-site in sections.

In 2009, the Federal Minister for Tourism at the time, Martin Ferguson, officially opened the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk. Today, the Moore family remains passionate about preserving the unique identity of their property. They continue to oversee a program which involves planting thousands of native plant species and removing invasive flora.

    Thunderbird Park
